Multimodal Response (Pro Blog Post #7)

I decided to make a zine because it is something I can make physically with creative tools and it is a fun project that I think students would enjoy! While making this zine, I thought a lot about the internal thoughts this character was having. The battle when it comes to discovering you are gay is another level of difficulty, and Flamer does a great job of showing this. As you can see, I used the word "Flamer" many times throughout the zine. This is simply because "flamer" is used as a slur for being gay, and the main character does get called this during the book. Although it is a graphic novel, there are many raw elements to it that make it seem so real (as it is based on the author's childhood and discovering he is gay as well)! Using a zine such as this can get students to go out of their comfort zone and use art materials, as well as giving them freedom on what they feel is important to include/show in their zine. When discussing civic engagement, this can show students the true emotions that the character is feeling and realize that it may be something that people feel in real life as well. For example, if a student is not gay and does not understand what it is like to figure that about themselves, they can use this text and project to understand a bit more of the emotions behind a discovery such as that. Overall, I enjoyed making a zine for this project, and it is definitely something I could see myself bringing into the classroom!

I would say that being able to do this blog was truly a fun experience and definitely something I could see being brought into a high school...
